Reported by Andry | Translated by Isa Efriadi
The plan of National Monument (Monas) Management Division to fine the visitors who bought foods and drinks from street vendors in that tourism area is getting support from Central Jakarta Mayor, Saefullah.
Related with fine sanction, I have to send a letter to the police, Jakarta Transportation Department, and the court to hold misdemeanor trial
Even though Saefullah assessed that sanction implementation is too early, the fine could give wary effect to visitors. And if there were no visitors buying food from street vendors, street vendors in Monas area will automatically disappear.
“The socialization must be done intensively. We will also hold leadership meeting with related authorities to finish Monas’ problems,” he stated, Monday (4/14).
According to Saefullah, at this time there are many factors that cause Monas becomes a chaotic area and has many illegal street vendors hawking their wares in the area. Moreover, Monas is also lacking of parking lots for visitors.
“Lack of parking area happened because many visitors park carelessly. Street vendors take benefits from this condition by coming to visitors’ vehicles directly,” he said.
Another problem is the fact that many coached vendors who are not satisfied with their income. In the end, some of them are become agent to street vendors by providing coffee until hot water.
“We are planning for Monas to no longer be the place to store merchandise anymore,” he asserted.
Based on the report, Saefullah continued, there are many vendors in Monas spending nights in their booths every day. So, about 200 vendors in the coaching location (lokbin) of Jakarta Cooperatives, Micro, Small, and Medium Scale Enterprises and Trade (UMKM) Department will be controlled by Satpol PP, the police, Jakarta UMKM Department, as well as parking unit.
“Monas’ problems are complicated. There must be a joint movement, it cannot be done individually.
Related with fine sanction, I have to send a letter to the police, Jakarta Transportation Department, and the court to hold misdemeanor trial ,” he finished.
